Stop Press! Chelsea Finally Registers A Win On #StarSuperFans

Has Chelsea finally broken its long and terrible run of form on Star Football Superfans going back to season 1? It would appear so, judging by the marathon effort put in on this week’s episode by the Royal Blues made up of Nathaniel “Nath” Efik Friday, Nwogu “Okey” Okechukwu, Ogbu Okanga, Olumide Aderigbigbe and Nwabisi “Bizzy” Chibueze. They took their opponents, Arsenal fans London Cannons made up of Olajide “Jide” Oladipupo, Ishola Tosin, Obinna A. Ogwor, Akinfolarin “Folarin” Ebenezer and Oboh A. John aka “Big J” all the way to a thrilling penalty shootout where they eventually triumphed.

From the start, both teams came out all guns blazing with 20-pointers all the way, but for whatever reason, the entire half ended without a single point registered for either side – the first time this would happen in two seasons of the massively popular football platform powered by Star Lager as noted by host Mozez Praiz.

After the break however, it was a different story as Folarin and Okanga stepped up to debate the question: “In the last London derby, was Arsenal’s loss to Chelsea the result of poor performance or Diego Costa’s antics?” Despite Folarin’s best efforts, Okanga carried the audience vote and finally the game had a goal – 1-0 to Royal Blues with one round of extra time to go.

If Okanga and his teammates thought that the job was done, they had another thought coming because right after that, on the Show Your Passion segment, even though Bizzy got the crowd rocking with a humorous rendition of Fela’s “Zombie”, Jide carried the vote for London Cannons to even the score at 1-1 at the end of extra time.

So it proved that for the second week running, and for only the third time in the history of the platform, the game went to a sudden death penalty shootout. Olumide stepped up for Royal Blues with the weight of Chelsea’s long history of failure on the show on his shoulders. Looking less than confident, he netted his penalty without blinking. Obinna stepped up for London Cannons and dispatched his penalty likewise.

Okanga then missed for Royal Blues, presenting Folarin with a glorious opportunity to finish off the game but he too missed. Bizzy then scored for Royal Blues and it all came down to Tosin for London Cannons. Miss this and lose the game – and he missed it, sending his penalty well wide to spark off wild jubilation in the Chelsea fan corner with the Royal Blues.

For only the second time in eleven attempts, a Chelsea team on Star Football Superfans was victorious, but what an effort it took from Okanga and his teammates! London Cannons, beaten but thoroughly unbowed got to go home with the N100, 000 consolation prize while Royal Blues at last – at long, long last – finally claimed the grand prize and this week’s bragging rights as the ultimate Superfans.

Speaking afterward, Corporate Affairs Adviser, NB Plc Kufre Ekanem remarked,

“The atmosphere was electric. Seeing these young football fans using this unique platform to display their huge passion and affiliation to their teams and the game, as a whole is why Star has created this platform. Where else would young fans get the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded in this way for being loyal football fans? That is what Star is all about. It’s about bringing out the Star in every Nigerians and giving it a platform to Shine for the world to see. Congratulations to Royal Blues!”
