The age-long rivalry between the two aristocrats of Spanish football was rekindled on Nigeria’s biggest football fan platform, Star Football Superfans with a 3-0 victory for Real Madrid over Barcelona. This week’s episode of the highly popular show, which is sponsored by Star Lager, saw fans of Real Madrid face off against fans of FC Barcelona for N1 million and the chance to become the ultimate superfans.

Lining up for the Barcelona team known, as Catalan Giants were Mayowa Odubanjo, Henry “Henri” Obasogie, Dandy “Danny” Mbengwa, William Omo “Wyn” Godwyn and Chimaroke “Chima” Christagunus. On the opposite side, lining up for the Real Madrid team The Galacticos were Ojo Gariel “Gabby”, Ezunuke Philip, Emmanuel “Nuels” Okereke, Olayinka Akinrinmade and Richard Precious “Presh”.

The Catalan Giants kicked off in the manner that the rest of their night would go – with a missed 10-pointer. The Galacticos immediately seized the initiative with 2 correct answers to open the scoring. The Barcelona fans meanwhile, missed all of their questions in the first half and it ended with the score at 1-0 to The Galacticos.

Host Mozez Praiz signaled the start of the second half with a debate on the question “Who is the more complete attacker between Ronaldo and Messi?” Yinka stepped out for The Galacticos and launched into a detailed analysis of Ronaldo’s goal scoring statistics. When his time was up, most of the audience was on its feet applauding his impassioned defense of his club’s highest-ever goal scorer.

Wyn then came up for Catalan Giants – and failed to impress the audience with his quiet, pedestrian performance. The end of his 45 seconds was only met with polite applause and it was no surprise when Mozez Praiz revealed that the vote had gone to The Galacticos. The surprise was that the 51:49 vote was too close.

With the game effectively over as a contest at 2-0 with one round to go, Mayowa and Presh came out for Catalan Giants and The Galacticos respectively in the ‘Show Your Passion’ segment. With the Blaugrana looking to get a consolation goal and salvage some pride, Presh rather brought the house down with a humorous fan chant poking fun at Barcelona and the audience responded more favourably to him than Mayowa who seemed somewhat put out.

Mozez Praiz took centre stage again to announce the result of the vote and it came in – 84:16 in favour of The Galacticos, bringing the game to an end. The five victorious Real Madrid fans celebrated wildly as they received the N1 million cheque and this week’s bragging rights while the beaten Barcelona fans went home with N100, 000.

Speaking afterward, Corporate Media and Brand PR Manager, NB Plc Edem Vindah remarked.

“Star Football Superfans is not just a platform for football fans to express their allegiance to their clubs and show their knowledge about the game. It is also a way of recognising regular everyday people who are passionate and knowledgeable and rewarding them for it. Star encourages Nigerians, particularly young Nigerians to ‘Shine On’ and what better way of doing this than by keying into their passions and making the ordinary extraordinary?”

After a massively successful debut season featuring appearances from fans of some of the world’s biggest football clubs including Arsenal, AC Milan, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, the second season of the Star Football Superfans platform is now open for football fans across the country to display their knowledge and passion for Nigeria’s number one sport and get rewarded for it.
